Thousands of users are looking for novel and different apps. But these eye-catching features are hotbeds of malicious content. Especially when it comes to social networks. In this way, vulnerabilities in Facebook and Whatsapp are increasingly being exposed. This is now the case with an alleged change in the color of the instant messaging app Whatsapp. The advertisement made by chats offered to download a pink version of Whatsapp through a link. However, when entering the link instead of the “new” Whatsapp a virus was installed.

This virus controls the entire device. So it is able to steal personal data, such as bank accounts. And other sensitive data contained in the mobile. So cyber criminals can both extort and sell the data and steal funds from bank accounts. Indian cyber security researcher Rajshekhar Rajaharia reported about this scam via Twitter.

Whatsapp pink: How to install it on the device

When clicking on the link, a pink background message appears describing the functions of the alleged app. Among them, the pink color that promotes and other new features not present in Whatsapp. The message invites you to click on a download button. When you click on it, it immediately downloads an APK file that apparently is the new Whatsapp. However, it is a malicious app with the virus.

Traps like these are historically common. Previously, millions of users were scammed with supposed premium or special versions of WhatsApp. For example, in 2015 a malicious version emerged, also with color change. Which promised to change the interface color to adopt blue. But instead it generated questionnaires and subscribed victims to paid services. WhatsApp Plus, an unofficial modified version, also attracted attention a few years ago. This app extended the functions offered by the legitimate app. However, after the acquisition of WhatsApp by Facebook, the company started blocking accounts using third-party versions like this one.
